The soil profile shows how the red slurry filled in the rough soil surface. Meanwhile it is assumed, although  macroscopically not visible, that the fine red mud particles have filled in the larger soil pores where usually the air used by the aerobic soil living organisms gets into the soil matrix.

In these conditions life becomes anaerobic in the soil underneath the sealing red mud layer.

Soil tillage would enable mixing of the upper red mud layer into the lower soil layers hus stopping soil sealing  and exposure to wind erosion of the dried red mud layer.

In areas where the red mud layer covering the soil is considerably thick,  expert teams should decide on the option to remove or mix into the soil the red mud.
