The red mud/sludge is the residue of bauxite production. It has high alkalinity and it is stored as slurry in storage ponds.  MAL Zrt., operator of the bauxite plant has already filled 9 reservoirs with the alkalic bauxite residue. Filling of the 10th reservoir was in progress. The dyke of this reservoir broke on the 4th October 2010. The slurry tide breaking through the red mud pond dyke has drifted pieces of the broken dyke. The pieces of this dyke are visible along the way of the red mud flood downstream the dyke.
