A dinoszauruszoktól az Archeopterixen, az ősmadáron keresztül, a mai madarakig vezető fejlődési útvonal látható ezen a válaszon. Az ősmadarat tollas dinoszauruszok előzték meg a sorban, de ezeknek a tolla még messze nem volt olyan bonyolult rendszer, mint a mai madaraké, inkább csak egy beül üreges kinövésre emlékeztetett.
